At our faculty meeting we started all of our presentations with why each of us was drawn to being on the [Social Harmony] committee. Sarah, our 6th grade teacher said: 'I wasn't drawn to it. I was assigned to it. I hate conflict. This was the last thing I wanted to do. After a year of being on the committee, I love it. I've used the process and it really works. I feel so much more confident dealing with students' conflicts and feel much more confident in the classroom.

Using the Social Harmony approach has given me a positive way to handle conflict between my students. They feel heard and empowered. They now have tools for handling disagreements on their own. One day I met them after recess, and a few girls ran up to me, their faces beaming. 'The soccer game was really unfair, but then we talked together and came up with a different strategy.' It worked! Everyone was happy!

There is a boy in my class who deals with hurt feelings by throwing a fist. Before Social Harmony, he was sent home often. He felt ashamed and angry with the teachers at school. Now he has the space to speak his side, and those who hurt him with words can empathize with him. This boy went from being a 'bad kid' to being a calm and contributing member to the social harmony of the class. He has not thrown a punch since.

Since using Social Harmony to navigate kid-to-kid conflicts and seeing its healing effects, our faculty is interested in using it to help with colleague-to-colleague conflicts.

Jane makes herself available for questions. Authentic and good humored, she is very easy to consult with. She can see very deeply into what you ask and speaks from a heart-felt, competent place.
