Level 2: Empowering the social Harmony community
Price: $6,000 (16 training hours)
Timing: 6 months - 1 year after Level 1
Overview: During Level 2, the Social Harmony Committee is trained to take Social Harmony concepts to all students in the school through age appropriate classroom curricula. This level also includes the first training for parents, and teachers are trained to provide consistent, effective discipline across classrooms. By the end of the Level 2 training, those trained should be well equipped to start shifting the way conflict and behavior are managed throughout the school community.
Fish Workshop – 2 hours
Attending: – 2nd grade parents, 2 or 3 SH Committee members
The Fish workshop conveys the idea that blaming (the teacher, the child who is bullying, the child who is targeted, the other parents, etc) doesn’t help parents fix the problems their children face at school. We learn that, instead, if everyone does a little part (like individual fish swimming together to create a cohesive school), we can make great change. In this workshop, parents identify what little part they can do. The SH Committee members are getting the experience of this workshop so they can lead it in the future.
Norming Workshop – 2 hours
Attending: 1st grade parents, 2 or 3 SH Committee members
This workshop supports parents of the incoming first grade cohort to consciously create the class community to be how they want it for the duration of their children’s grade school years. Using the Coach 4 Success™ tool, parents use this time to make requests of and commitments to each other. Instead of living with unspoken expectations and obligations, the class leaves with a set of norms, such as “We will ask other parents’ permission before offering their children sugar.” This workshop is also the place where the SH Committee can introduce new parents to the Social Harmony Program structure and field questions.
Faculty Discipline Workshop – 3 hours
Attending: Faculty
This workshop describes the structure of the brain and the different models of discipline, including attachment theory, Social Harmony, praise /consequences, and rewards /punishments. Faculty use real situations to practice deciding which situations require which models of discipline.
Social Harmony Committee Training – 3 hours
Attending: SH Committee members
During this training we will DO many of the curriculum games. Fun! We will also empower SH members to lead the future trainings of the Fish Workshop and future norming workshops using Coach 4 Success. We will also plan together for the conflict resolution training for parents that will occur that evening, so that the SH members can essentially run it and be prepared to run it wholesale in future. There should also be time to discuss cases and problems.
How to Feel Nice With All Folks (HFNWAF) Conflict Resolution Workshop for parents – 3 hours
Attending: All community members, including 7/8th graders (if they agree to behave well) are invited.
This workshop is essentially the same as the HFNWAF training for faculty. This is a chance for the SH Committee members to run a workshop with support from Social Harmony staff. The hope is that this training will continue every year, run by your SH Committee, for new parents and faculty, and for further practice at conflict resolution for anyone who wants it.
2nd Social Harmony Committee Training – 3 hours
Attending: SH Committee members
At this training we will play more curriculum games, de-brief from the previous night’s HFNWAF workshop, and learn the curriculum.
Faculty Q&A Workshop
Attending: Faculty and SH Committee members if you desire
This workshop is open time to meet the needs of the faculty and SH Committee members. Questions can be gathered before the workshop, or fielded during it. Facilitators will bring some exercises to do in case there is extra time.
Phone Support
30-minutes of phone support for the Social Harmony Committee chair, bi-weekly for 1 month (2 calls) following the training, and once per month after that for 11 months.
Note: If the SH Committee chair is still utilizing his/her one-year of phone support from Level 1, these additional phone support hours will be combined with those calls in a manner agreed upon by the committee chair and SH facilitator.
